Cheri McDonald had shopped the Twice As Nice consignment sale in Apex before.

And when sisters Michelle Zimmerman and Karen Dorman took it over in 2008, McDonald found herself getting more involved. McDonald is a busy small business owner and the mom of two. But because she homeschools her kids, ages 10 and 15, they were able to help set the sale up during the day.

"We just started volunteering more and more," she said.

McDonald also started spreading the word about Twice as Nice, especially to all her friends in the homeschooling community. And they, in turn, started asking her if the sale stocked homeschool curriculum and supplies.

So she suggested a homeschool corner to Zimmerman and Dorman. And they were more than happy to let McDonald lead it. The corner has grown steadily since it first started about two years ago. Twice as Nice is held twice a year, in the winter and summer.

"It's a great opportunity for homeschool moms to consign and get an immediate return for their money," she said. And it's also a good time for moms who homeschool to load up on supplies as they start thinking about what their kids might need for the next school year, she said.

You'll find nearly new supplies, books, educational DVDs and more for typically 75 percent to 80 percent off retail, she said. And some items are even free.

McDonald said the best part about it is seeing a need and finding out everybody else was looking for the same thing.

"It's been really good to see other women be responsive to it," she said.

Twice As Nice, at Hope Chapel at 6175 Old Jenks Rd. in Apex, is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Some items will be half off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. There also is opportunity for pregnant and new moms (with kids under 1 year) to start shopping at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Check the website for details.
