Weekend Plans: Consignment sale, Choo-Choo Soul, more

We've got a massive consignment sale at the N.C. State Fairgrounds, Disney's Choo-Choo Soul in town, all about materials sciences and more this weekend. Your weekend family fun.

The Kids Exchange consignment sale at the N.C. State Fairgrounds is open to the public Friday through Sunday. This massive sale features pretty much everything you'd ever need for babies and kids. Check my earlier post for details. Of course, this is the first of many consignment sales in the area. Check the consignment sale list for more information.
Moredecai Historic Park near downtown Raleigh will open its doors for free tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Check my earlier post for details.

Flaherty Park Community Center at 1226 N. White St. in Wake Forest will host an open house from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Meet instructors, ask questions and register for upcoming programs at this Wake Forest park. The event also will feature group performances and instructor demonstrations. The Carolina Theatre in Durham will present Disney's Choo-Choo Soul with Genevieve! at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. You may have seen this duo's videos on the Disney Channel featuring a hip-hop train conductor and a beatboxing railroad engineer. Tickets start at $16 for adults. Kids ages 12 and under get $5 off.
Scientists from across the Triangle will converge on the Museum of Life and Science from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday during an event called "Making Stuff." The program, a partnership between PBS, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, N.C. State, Morehead Planetarium and IBM, focuses on the emerging field of materials science. Visitors will see materials change states, watch as stain resistant clothing is put to the test and more. Making Stuff is a new series that is debuting on PBS. The Raleigh City Museum will take a look at Tools & Toys: The History of Play during a special family event from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Kids can learn about the history of play through hands-on activities with toys of the past. Kids can play historic games and learn how to make toys such as a cornhusk doll. It's free.
The N.C. Museum of Art's children's performance series will present "The Owl and the Turtle" with Rags to Riches Theatre for Young Audiences. Shows are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are just $3. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance, which is less than an hour long. Best for kids ages five and up. Seating is limited and tickets can sell out for these programs. The museum also will offer a drop-in craft on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A ticket to the show is not required to do the craft.
On Saturday, kids can learn all about karate during Marbles Kids Museum's Family Fit Series from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. And Marbles' Gadgets and Gizmos series will let kids explore engineering and solve puzzles with hands-on, creative activities with help from N.C. State's The Engineering Place. It's from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Both are drop-in activities and free with admission to Marbles in Raleigh, which is $5 a person. Also ... if you're off school on Monday for a teacher work day as many of us are, Marbles will be open on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Skating at Raleigh's downtown ice rink continues through Jan. 30 (including Monday if you're off from school).
And a note: The George Washington exhibit at the N.C. Museum of History closes out on Friday. Don't go to the N.C. Symphony's Young People's Series concert on Saturday unless you have tickets. It's sold out. And The Lion King continues at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
