Amanda Lamb: Disney dreams on ice

It was like one of those commercials for Disney World - you know the ones with the home videos? My older daughter opens the box, reads the note, pulls out the Minnie Mouse T-shirts and goes nuts.

“I’m going to Disney World,” she screams at the top of her lungs. She is on her back, her legs and arms are in the air waving frantically. My youngest, on the other hand, is sitting in the foreground with her arms crossed and her lips pursed. It’s like a bad Saturday Night Live sketch.

“What’s wrong?” I say incredulously. “You’re going to Disney World. You should be the happiest kid on earth.” We had been told for years that everyone they knew had been, and they were begging us to take them. Finally, my husband decided it was the right time. I had them go on a treasure hunt Christmas morning. Each location had a poem with a clue that led them to the next spot. The final spot was the box that contained the prize.

My little one shakes her head and grunts, and then I get it. She is mad because the trip will occur during her sister’s birthday weekend. Even though the trip is really a Christmas present for both of them, it also is combined with a birthday celebration.

“You should be happy,” I say in disbelief at her reaction as my other daughter continues to scream and jump up and down in the background just like I had imagined they both would. My bet is that she will eventually warm up to the idea and realize that it may be

her sister’s birthday, but she gets to tag along on the adventure to the most magical place on earth.

Somehow, though, I don’t think our video is going to make the cut for a Disney commercial!
