"Fins and Feathers," one of the five new exhibitions at the N.C. Museum of Art, isn't a giant exhibit.

The 33 original illustrations from children's books line the walls of a small gallery on the floor just below the entrance of the museum's East Building. But it's definitely worth the visit, especially if you're a fan of illustrators and authors such as Eric Carle and Leo Lionni.

The exhibit, which comes from The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Arts, features both those artists, along with  a number of works by Arnold Lobel, who illustrated classic stories in "The Random House Book of Poetry for Children" and "The Random House Book of Mother Goose," and others.

The art museum on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh reopens its East Building at 10 a.m. Sunday with five exhibitions, including "Fins and Feathers" and "American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell."

I got a preview of Fins and Feathers on Thursday. Curator Jennifer Dasal spoke with me about some of the pieces. Check the video for more.

And check my earlier post for more on the family programs that are part of both Fins and Feathers and the Rockwell exhibit. And stay tuned for more information about additional events.

Some of the programs will be located in The Front Porch area, a new space in the old building across the hall from Fins and Feathers. The recreated front porch includes rocking chairs, a few games and copies of the Saturday Evening Post. Next to it is a new gift shop with some great toys and gifts for kids for the holidays.

The museum also has opened a cafe in the building where you can pick up sandwiches or snacks.

The Rockwell exhibit is ticketed. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, military and students age 13 and up; and $7.50 for kids 7 to 12. It's free for children 6 and under. Fins and Feathers is free. Check the art museum's website for more information about all the exhibits.

Both Rockwell and Fins and Feathers are open through Jan. 30.

And a note: If you go Sunday, just be aware that Blue Ridge Road will be closed to traffic from Hillsborough Street and Wade Avenue to the museum entrance from 10 a.m. to noon. It's best to travel to the museum from the north Sunday morning.
