Lynda Loveland: New addition

Posted November 3, 2010

Lynda Loveland

We’ve been watching and waiting for months and finally our new addition is here. She’s an eight-week-old Australian Shepherd/Cattledog mix named Bindi.

So this is the tally at our house: Two parents, three kids, two dogs, five guinea pigs and three goldfish. WOULD SOMEONE GET MY HEAD CHECKED!

Lynda Loveland's puppy

I’ve had more than one person tell me I’m crazy these past few days. My husband accuses me of trying to bring my upbringing on the farm to Cary. Although he was all for getting the pup too. Man, is she a cutie. She’s been doing really well as far as house training and not crying all night.

I’ve been reading a book called “How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With.” It’s a great book with fantastic advice. It should be called “How to Raise a Child You Can Live With”. There are a lot of similarities. We’re even using some of the same kid equipment for the pup. We have it corralled with “fencing” we used for the kids.

Now if I could only find some use for all those dang Mighty Beans and Silly Bandz!

Lynda Loveland is the mom of three kids and co-host of Mix 101.5 WRAL-FM's Bill & Lynda in the Morning. Find her here on Thursdays.

Our house is a zoo too! My husband and I share our house with a friend to save money. She has a 7 year old who is with us part of the time and at his dad's part of the time. Between all of us, we have 3 cats, 1 dog, 2 box turtles, 3 parakeets, 3 frogs, 1 hamster, 1 beta fish, and crickets to feed the frogs.

Congratulations on your new addition. I've had two Cattledogs (Healers) in the past that were as different as day and night. The first was raised in the house and was never happier than when she was in your lap. However, when outside, I had to keep her confined as she loved to explore and bark at anything she felt might be "invading" her territory (which seemed to be a lot). The 2nd one was very aggressive and loved nothing better than to challenge my older, loving bigger dog. Eventually had to rehome her to a single dog family.

Expect to keep your new addition very active in order to keep her happy. Both breeds are herding breeds and will look for something to work if you don't provide it.

They are both great breeds so you should have a good dog if you understand their needs.

I've owned 3 Australian Shepherds. They are great with kids. Lots of fun and so smart. Be sure to buy her a frisbee when she's young. It is easy to teach them to catch it, and great exercise for everyone.

The vet told me that I needed my head checked when I took our new puppy in (we have three children, too!) It is like having a fourth child~ but worth all the love :)
