There's a new mommy and baby yoga class in Raleigh at Blue Lotus Yoga and Movement Arts.

Instructor Jen Davis started the class in September. It meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and is open to all levels (and dads as well). It's designed for pre-crawlers, though Davis tells me they've had a couple of crawlers and it's worked out fine.

Davis says she offers many modifications for poses so beginners are more than welcome. The class gives moms a chance to bond with their baby as they work on yoga postures, breath work and meditation. Participants can touch and smile at their babies through the class and hold them during meditation and final resting (be sure to bring baby blankets).

The fee is $10. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Just get there 10 minutes early if it's your first time to fill out a quick form and get introduced to the space.

Davis, a mom herself, tells me she hopes the class gives parents the opportunity to connect with other parents and take a yoga class.

Blue Lotus is on North West Street near the Glenwood South area close to downtown Raleigh. Blue Lotus also offers yoga for kids as well. Kids classes are done in ten week series, but participants are welcome to drop in from time to time as well.

Davis will lead a special event for kids ages 7 to 11 this weekend. The Kids Yoga and Art Workshop is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Blue Lotus. Kids will move around in yoga poses, read "Scaredy-Cat Splat!," a book by Rob Scotton and then paint the character "Splat the Cat." All paintings will hang in the Cameron Village Library from Oct. 24 to Nov. 29. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. The fee is $35 per child.
