When leaders at Kidzu Children's Museum were searching for a new fundraiser, Corey Williams had just the idea.
Williams, the mom of three and a photographer, was inspired by fundraisers that photographers have held for the LightFactory, a museum of photography and film in Charlotte. Photographers donate their services for photo shoots. All the money raised from the shoots and the sale of the photographs goes back to the museum.
So Williams rounded up some local professional photographers and planned Kidzu's Great Shoot Out. The event on Sunday at the N.C. Botanical Garden features what Williams calls some of the "kid-friendliest" photographers in the area. They will be offering their services to photograph kids and families.
Photo sessions are about 30 minutes and cost $80 for Kidzu members and $100 for people who aren't members. That's at least half of what most of the 14 photographers, some award-winning with work in national publications, normally charge for a session. The photographs will be sold through Shutterfly.com at 20 percent to 70 percent off what the photographers normally charge (they range between $10 and $80 a piece). You can also put the photographs on mugs, luggage tags and a variety of other items.
At last check on Tuesday afternoon, there were about 25 slots still available, Williams said. Sessions start at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Photographers are planning to set up at spots around the garden, including some indoor locations.
Williams has been involved with Kidzu since the beginning. The children's museum on Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill opened in 2006 and is now working to expand about a block away. Williams said the money raised will help the museum with its operating cost and the expansion. She hopes it becomes an annual event.
