The North Carolina Symphony will launch its 2010-2011 season with a free outdoor concert at the new downtown Raleigh Amphitheater on Sept. 12.
Seating is first come, first served for the concert which starts at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. And Minneapolis-based multi-instrumentalist Dosh will open the event at 5:45 p.m. with his electronic blend of folk keyboard and experimental sampling. Dosh will be there in collaboration with the Hopscotch Music Festival, which will take over 10 venues in Raleigh from Sept. 9 to Sept. 11.

Maybe it's just because I'm a mom, but when I first heard the festival was going to be called "Hopscotch," I got a little excited that it was going to include some kid-friendly shows. (And just in case the Hopscotch organizers are reading, there are a ton of amazing indie performers out there who cater to kids and parents from North Carolina and beyond. I'm happy to share. It would add a great dimension to the festival for what it's worth. Maybe next year?).

But I digress. Back to the symphony concert ... I'm a believer in exposing kids to all kinds of music. And there's no better opportunity than during a free concert where all you'll lose is some time if the kids aren't into it.

The symphony concert will include works by Handel and Mendelssohn along with Broadway show crowd pleasers. The upcoming symphony season also features plenty for families, including the Young People's Series and a Holiday Pops Special for Kids. I'm especially excited to take my own daughter to hear a childhood favorite of mine - Peter and the Wolf - in March.
