Cary's Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve closed next week
Cary's Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve will be closed Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 so staff can focus on treating the aggressive Hemlock Woolly Adelgids.

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve and the Stevens Nature Center in Cary will be closed Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 so staff can focus on treating the aggressive Hemlock Woolly Adelgids.
Woolly Adelgids sound like they might be the villain in some horror movie. In fact, they're an invasive, non-native aphid-like insect that could destroy the preserve's Hemlock trees. The bugs were found earlier this summer and have affected 11 trees. Next week, trees will undergo a first phase of treatment, weather permitting, called "bark painting." The facilities are scheduled to reopen and operate under normal business hours Sept. 4.
Hemlock Bluffs and the Stevens Nature Center on Kildaire Farm Road are both centers of Cary's many nature programs with activities for toddlers to teens. The nature center includes an exhibit hall and gift shop. Hemlock Bluffs has about three miles of trails and that unique stand of Hemlock trees.
