Back to School: Is it the 'most wonderful time of the year?'

Posted August 25, 2010

Maybe I'm a goof, but I have always laughed out loud at the Staples back-to-school commercial where the dad flits through the aisles to the tune of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" as his sullen children follow.

But the ad took on a bit of a different meaning for me this year. This was the first year I actually found myself in the aisles of various big box, office supply and craft stores getting school supplies for my child. My daughter will be headed to kindergarten in a few days.

We're working on our morning routine so we can get out the door on time. We're checking and rechecking the supply list to make sure we have everything. And we're talking about what to fill the lunchbox with. There's plenty of excitement and plenty of anxiety too.

How have things gone in your house? Are you excited the kids are back in school or sad summer is over?

Love yr round school. My kids get a nice break when needed, enjoy it, and return to school refreshed. They never seem to get burned out. I kind of reminds me of my job, in which I take my vacation days throughout the yr in different size chunks to avoid burn out.

The summer flew by. I have a 1st and 3rd grader and am shocked how quickly it seemed to go this summer. I think we needed a week or two more!! I am for starting after Labor Day and ending at Memorial Day and cutting out workdays...Plenty of other states can do it. Hope to it NC.

LOL - I do love that commercial. YR school is amazing. Just about the time my son needs a break, he gets it, and just about the time I'm ready to kill him cuz he's bored and starting to get into trouble he goes back! He was very excited to start school in August, and is actually not really looking forward to track-out yet (though he tracks out in 2 weeks), except that his track-out time comes just as his sister starts preschool again. Which means he gets good one-on-one time with Mom, and we're both looking forward to that :) It's wonderful.

my 8yr old daughter was excited about starting 3rd grade until this morning when she said her stomach hurt and maybe she shouldn't go to school today. Long story short she went off to school without a hitch and would not even let her daddy walk her to class. She said she could do it herself. My 4yr old starts kindergarten next year, Oh how I will be running around like a crazy woman that morning.

Mixed feelings. The routine is great for the kids and they are less bored. Homework and extracurricular activites begin to complicate the family schedule.
