Volunteers to help build Raleigh playground

Raleigh has a few more slots for volunteers who are needed to help build a new playground at Southgate Park.

More than 200 volunteers from life insurance provider Foresters, Raleigh parks and the local community will gather this Saturday to build the playground on Proctor Street south of downtown Raleigh. The effort is organized by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that works to place a playground within walking distance of every child in the United States.

The work will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled.

The playground is based on drawings created by children in the community during a design day in June.

The park is at least the fourth park in the Triangle that's gotten a makeover with KaBOOM! in the last couple of years. In Raleigh, the playgrounds at Green and Lane Street parks were replaced last year. Burch Avenue Park in Durham got a new playground in June.
