Durham and Wake county schools systems are both involved in big events this month to help rising or current kindergartners get ready for school.

Both events let kids get a taste of kindergarten with chances to hop on a school bus or make their way through a lunch line, for instance. Parents will find lots of information as well as they prepare to send their little ones off to school (and that would include me this year ... sniff sniff).

And best of all, the free events are in favorite kid spots: the Museum of Life and Science in Durham and Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh.

Durham County School System's Countdown to Kindergarten is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Museum of Life and Science.
In Wake County, the Kickoff to Kindergarten is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 21 (a Saturday). And really cute alert: Rising first graders will be on hand at this event to answer rising kindergartners questions.  Note that Marbles will not be open to the general public that day until noon.

Both events are only for rising (or current) kindergartners and their families.
