KaBOOM! is back to help build at least the third playground in the Triangle in the last year.

The national nonprofit dedicated to providing kids a place to play is joining forces with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the city of Durham, Duke University and more than 200 community volunteers to build a new, safe playground at Burch Avenue Park. The park is at 816 Burch Ave. in Durham.

The new playground is based on drawings created by kids who participated in a design day event in April. The new playground will provide more than 1,300 kids in the local neighborhood with a safe place to play. Right now, the park has outdated equipment to play on. The old equipment will be removed.

The day-long build will start at 8:30 a.m. June 5. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. that day. Volunteers will be moving 43,740 square feet of safety surfacing by hand.

And there is still a need for volunteers. If you're interested, contact Annette Smith at (919) 560-4355 or email her at Annette.Smith@durhamnc.gov. Volunteers must be age 16 and older.

The Burch Avenue Park is at least the third park that KaBOOM! has been involved with in the Triangle in the last year. In 2009, KaBOOM! helped Raleigh renovate two parks: Green Street and Lane Street. And the City Council recently approved plans for the nonprofit to replace the playground equipment at Southgate Park.
