Weekend Plans: Moms, Legos and more

There's no reason to stick at home this weekend. Lots to do including Mother's Day events, a big Lego festival and the last weekend of Megalodon.

Plenty to do this weekend so let's not waste time ...

It's the First Friday of the month and that means there's lots to do in downtown Raleigh as part of the monthly First Fridays, which features gallery openings, restaurant specials and other activities. This Friday, there will be even more to do now that Marbles Kids Museum is staying open until 8 p.m. on the first Friday of the month.
It's the last weekend of Megalodon, the exhibit on the largest shark that ever lived at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. The museum, which also stays open late on First Fridays, will feature some scenes from shark-related films on Friday as well. The exhibit closes Sunday.
Lots of Mother's Day-related events this weekend. They include events at Marbles and a Sunday afternoon concert at Raleigh's The Pour House featuring the fun kids and family band called Mommie, which includes The Connells singer Doug MacMillan.
And then there is the huge Lego festival Brick Magic, which runs Saturday and Sunday at the Hilton North Raleigh. There will be a professional Lego builder, custom Lego creations, animated Lego films, Lego workshops, Lego robots, Lego roses to make for mom, vendors selling custom-Lego parts, Lego ... you get the picture.
Carolina Theatre in Durham will offer a ballet version of the classic story Peter Pan at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday.
The ArtsCenter in Carrboro celebrates its 35th anniversary with Cirques des Artes, an outdoor festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and plenty for kids to do. Check back here tomorrow for more details on all that The ArtsCenter offers families.
The Stevens Nature Center at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be family-friendly interactive stations and activities highlighting bird migration, bird watching techniques and how to create an inviting backyard for birds. Bird walks led by Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve staff will run throughout the day.
The Duke Gardens storytime is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. Best for kids ages 3 to 8 and best to get there early. They can fill up. It's $2 for nature stories and a take home project. Plus the gardens will have its regular drop-in craft activity on Sunday.
And kids can learn all about how Raleigh got its name. The Raleigh City Museum on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh will present Raleigh 101 for Kids at 2 p.m. Saturday. The family program teaches basic Raleigh history. Craft included. It's free and open to the public.
And the annual TurtleFest! at Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. You'll find interactive exhibits, crafts, wildlife rehabilitators and games. Lots of lessons about the importance of water quality. It's free.
