Kids can take home a farmer-grown tomato seedling Saturday at the Carrboro Farmers' Market's fifth annual kid's seedling event.

Over the last six weeks, the market's farmers have grown the plants especially for the kids. Fifth Season Gardening Company will provide organic potting soil in the pots. And Kidzu Children's Museum will offer a seedling-themed kids activity behind the market's gazebo.

The seedlings are available starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The event is held the same weekend as the Carolina Farm Stewardship's Piedmont Farm Tour, which opens the doors to farms across the Piedmont region of North Carolina.

And in related market news, you'll be able to start using your credit and debit cards at the market starting May 1. Carrboro Farmers' Market will launch the Common Currency Program which will allow customers to use their credit, debit or EBT cards to buy wooden tokens called "Truck Bucks," which can be used like cash throughout the market. (EBT cards replace paper food stamps and checks).

As an incentive to shoppers using food stamp benefits, for every $20 they spend, they will receive $20 in free market dollars to spend while supplies last.
