I'm originally from upstate New York. Up there, strawberry season always falls around July 4. And strawberry shortcake was always a big part of our celebration.

So it took me a year or so to get used to strawberry shortcake at Memorial Day. Not that I'm complaining.

Strawberry season has started in the Triangle with most farms now open for business. The season runs through about mid-June.

Mark your calendars for Strawberry Day, which is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh. The event includes free samples of strawberry ice cream, an appearance by "Suzy the Strawberry," a dessert contest and a large selection of fresh, local strawberries.
And if you're like me and looking forward to picking your own berries, here's our sortable database of Triangle strawberry farms.
