Still looking for summer camps? Some ideas

Wanted to share some information about some summer programs that I'm hearing about. From my inbox ...

The N.C. Museum of History has spots open in its summer programs. The downtown Raleigh museum offers camps on everything from pirates to the 1960s for kindergartners to eighth graders. Click here for details.

Meredith College offers some great summer programs, camps and swim lessons. They include a four-day residential program for girls who are rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to give them a taste of college life. I'm keeping this one filed in the back of my mind for when my own daughters are this age. Click here for all the details on the summer programs. And here's more information on all the college's summer camps.

Peace College in Raleigh is holding theater master camps for serious theater students ages 8 to 21. The three week-long sessions in June and July offer training with experienced professionals in singing, acting, movement and comedy. The faculty include Lily Knight, who has appeared in film and on TV; Judy Kuhn, a Tony-nominated actress and singer who sang the title role in Disney's "Pocahontas;" and Jeff A. R. Jones, a recognized fight director. For more information or to set up an audition appointment, contact Monique Gannon at (919) 217-0962. The cost for the camps start at $750 a week.

And N.C. Theatre offers summer programs for kids ages 4 and up. Some are based on popular shows like "Glee" and "So You Think You Can Dance." Click here for details.

Millbrook Baptist Kindergarten at 1519 East Millbrook Road in Raleigh has a great summer camp program for preschoolers..ages 1-6! Check out the website at www.millbrookbaptistchurch.org and click on preschool information. They run 2 week 1/2 day sessions all summer long..The Wee campers program for one year olds runs 3 sessions and the 2-6 camp runs 5 sessions. Topics this year include: The Color Red, Endangered Species, The Sky, Going to the Zoo, and Commotion in the Ocean. A fun day camp for your preschooler!

You will be AMAZED with the art your kids bring home. My children love to go to Ms. Phillips' School of Art! She has been teaching these private group classes in the North Hills area of Raleigh for 30+ years and all kids just adore her! For more information, you can contact Ms. Bettie Phillips at beteebop@aol.com or 919-781-4539. It is not crafts, but focused on painting and drawing. The classes are one week long and her sessions this summer are June 14th - 18th or June 21st - 25th. Ages are 5 years old through 4th grade for the drawing & painting classes; and 4th - 7th grade basic pencil sketching. -Jakie Bowles This is the best art camp in town!

Thanks everybody for the recommendations! Keep them coming!

If you're looking for science/technology camps, I've been impressed with the offerings from Cary Academy. They have everything from computer animation to robotics . . . even a few "green" camps. Here is the link: http://www.caryacademy.org/page.cfm?p=10

I recommend Oak Ridge Military Academy.

They will take your child off your hands and send them back to you over the summer, kind of like a reverse summer camp!

Mercersburg Academy Summer Programs has a program for every young kid looking to have a summer full of new and fun experiences. Go to www.mercersburgsummer.com to check our Young Writers, Summer Theatre, Robotics and Adventure Camp programs. New this summer, get prepared for the intricacies of the college admission process and check out mercersburg college prep!

I have a recommendation for anyone looking for a sports themed summer camp. The NC State Wolfpack Golf Schools run 4 camps during the summer in June and July. They accept ages 6-18 and various skill levels for the 4 weeks. There are several spots still left in each of the 4 weeks offered. Be sure to check out the 4 weeks as the qualifications differ from week to week. Feel free to call (919)846-1536; or check out wildwoodgreen.com and look for the State logo for more information.
