Moms rise up in North Carolina

Posted March 21, 2010

For the last few years, a group of moms in the Triangle have gotten together for an unusual kind of play date every once in a while.

They meet at the state legislature with their kids to talk with legislators and lobby for better family leave policies, for instance. Then they head over to Marbles for some play time.

The group, the local chapter of a national organization called MomsRising, is becoming more and more active across North Carolina. They are pushing for everything from paid family leave and more open flexible work schedules for parents to better after-school programs for kids and fewer chemicals in their lives.

MomsRising members in the Triangle will be writing about their work here on Go Ask Mom every month or so. You'll find them here on Tuesdays starting tomorrow when Beth Messersmith, a Durham mom of two, writes about a state legislative study commission looking at issues such as paid sick days and paid family leave.

While I know not all of you will agree with MomsRising, I hope that their posts spark some discussion on issues that touch a lot of families.

To learn more about MomsRising, check out my interview with Beth.

There's no better way to teach our children that their country belongs to them than to walk them right up to the Capitol and let them see it first hand. Especially as they take part in shaping policies that will directly affect their families. I think this is great.

Having healthy children and supporting hard working families sounds pretty important to me.Our officials need to hear our concerns. Believe it or not, our voices matter too.

Moms Rising is a great organization! Working to implement policies such as paid sick days and family medical leave a waste of time? Absolutely not! I am proud of the work this organization is doing and I look forward to reading more posts from members!

You've done an amazing job connecting Moms and setting up visits with our representatives--it's been so great to see parents get out there and visit their Senators and Congresspeople.

What a fantastic way to get involved in the community to make a difference! Fighting for a more family-friendly America for your children is definitely NOT a waste of time. I'm looking forward to more of your posts!

Sounds like a waste of time.
