New website rates consignment sales

Posted March 20, 2010

A Greensboro mom has launched a new website where users can rate children's consignment sales.

Crissy Freeman caught the consignment sale bug after the birth of her son about 15 months ago. Her mom had shopped the sales to prepare for her new grandson, but Crissy said she kind of just rolled her eyes and laughed. Then she shopped some of the sales.

"It just seems so practical to me," she said. "It's great for recycling and being green."

Crissy does web design in her spare time and she was looking for a way to expand her portfolio. She launched consignmentmommies.com last fall just as a way to learn a new web development system. She focused on sales in Greensboro and Raleigh and figured it would all be a learning experience.

But interested has exploded since then. She's getting tens of thousands of hits during the current consignment sale season. Interest also has expanded beyond North Carolina with listings for sales in Atlanta and Nashville, among other places. The site lists sales, but also lets people rate them.

"Some of [the sales} are really good and some are not so good," Crissy said. "There are helpful tips like this one is in multiple rooms, don't bring your strollers."

"The immediate goal last time was to learn a new web development system ... and wouldn't it be great if it went national and wouldn't be great if my idea took hold.," she said. "It's been amazing that this one really has now. We aren't making very much money. We're selling a little bit of advertising. I see next season we'll have the opportunity to aggressively market that."

There are still lots of sales in the weeks to come in the Triangle. Check the Go Ask Mom list for the latest.
