Get kids swept up in curling at open house

Posted February 27, 2010

I've been watching curling with more interest than usual this year because a member of the Canadian team is pregnant. And it wasn't that long ago that I was pregnant myself.

Apparently being pregnant and curling works just fine together. The Canadian team is playing for the gold.

But if you and your kids would like to wrap your heads further around this game of rinks, slides and rocks, then you should head over to the Triangle Curling Club's open houses, which are slated for March 5, March 7 and March 12. The group hopes to take advantage of interest in curling that comes after the Olympics and would love to get more kids involved in the sport.

Brian Chick of the club tells me that kids are more than welcome to attend the open houses at the Polar Ice House in Wake Forest. The granite rocks used to play weigh about 42 pounds and, while you don't need to lift them to play, they might be a little heavy for the youngest among us. He says kids ages 10 and up can usually handle them.

And until now, the club hasn't been playing at the most child-friendly of times ... usually 9 to 11 p.m. on Fridays. But Chick tells me they hope to add earlier hours with the added interest from the Olympics. That includes a spring curling league on Sunday afternoons starting in late March to early May.

But to get you and the kids started, the three open houses are from 9 to 10:30 p.m. March 5, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 7 and 9 to 10:30 p.m. March 12. It's $10 per person. No registration required.

There's also a Learn to Curl program where pre-registration is required. It's $20 per person. The times are 4 to 6:30 p.m. March 14, 8 to 10:30 p.m. March 18 and 8 to 10:30 p.m. March 19.

That you for the post. Curling was a hug hit at the 2010 Olympics. We are anticpating a great turn out for our open houses so we have adjusted some of the times. The open houses on March 5th and 12th will start at 8 pm. We are looking at adding additional Learn to Curls as online registration is now full for the ones listed.

    Good Curling!!!
