Project Enlightenment could face cuts

Thank you to Lori for sharing that Project Enlightenment may face some pretty major cuts in the next fiscal year.

According to another source of mine, programs at the popular center, which provides resources and counseling for parents, caregivers and teachers of kids ages birth to 5, could be on the chopping block as part of proposed cuts to the system's central services operations.

Back in November, Wake superintendent Del Burns called for senior management to make plans for cutting central services operations to close a $20 million budget gap. Burns will present his proposed budget to the school board on Tuesday. The board must send their proposed budget to Wake County commissioners by May 15.

I featured some of the work that Project Enlightenment does in the community earlier this month as part of a series on kindergarten readiness. See the blogposts and videos just to the left of this post. The center will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Lori has launched a Facebook page to urge school board members to "Save Project Enlightenment." Click here to find it.

I posted about this topic on my blog today: http://www.dirtandnoise.com/2010/03/project-enlightenment-saved-my-family.html

Project Enlightenment saved what was quickly becoming an unraveled family. It would be a travesty to lose it. Stop the madness, school board.

Debbie Jeffress a parent educator, has in her over 30 years of commitment there, tought hundreds of teachers who have tought thousands of children. PE's ripple effect has affected most if not all of wake county's children. They are one of the best resources wake county school district has to offer. They should be receiving national awards not being slated for execution.

the class on anger management was one of the most eye opening classes in my life. I learned more in the 2 hours about (not just my child) how people are triggered to anger and how to work with people who can't manage their own....

In 2004 when my daughter was 4 years old and tantruming for several hours per day, I sought help from project enlightenment, took their classes, met with a parent educator, and I became a much better parent for my highly spirited child.

There is a letter posted on the front door at Project Enlightenment about this...

Looks like we were typing at the same time ...

Sarah

I exchanged emails with Lori about this. I ran into the same problem. It's up and down sporadically for me though I did just get it up. Anyway ... Lori thinks it's a Facebook issue and has contacted them about it.

Sarah (editor)

I take that back...I can access the FB page now. It was unavailable for well over an hour....

Any idea why your friends Facebook page is no longer available?! I sure hope its not because she was telling false information... PE is a great program, our family has benefited...I don't want to see it go away.

This is horrible! I also posted more info I got from our local moms group (that I am in with Lori) as well as 3 of the board members Facebook pages in my blog. http://www.ramblingsofastayathomemom.com/2010/02/if-you-live-in-wake-county-north.html
