Build your wardrobe one item at a time

Do you ever stand in front of your closet wondering what to wear? It seems truly baffling that, when we have a closet filled with clothing, we can’t seem to find anything we actually want to leave the house in. So what’s a mama to do?

Let’s start at step one. First, take a good, long, hard look at your closet and try to determine why you can’t create a fabulous outfit.

Chances are you’re missing the foundation to your wardrobe – core wardrobe items. These include (but are not limited to) a great pair of jeans, a suit, a little gray dress, an ivory blouse, etc. These workhorse items will be the building blocks from which to begin your wardrobe.

Having too many clothes can lead us to believe that we’ll always have something to wear, when the reality is that when we don’t have the right items to build from we are going to have a tough time getting dressed.

So start with a few good core items and then add in what I like to call accent items. These are the fun pieces in your wardrobe – a cute print top, leopard print shoes, a teal jacket – and will help you to create your own unique look. Add to that some chic, versatile accessories and you’ll have the makings for many effortless outfits to come.

Building a wardrobe isn’t something that just happens overnight. It involves strategy and even a bit of willpower. You’ll need to say “no” to a few of those impulse buys so you can put your money towards items you know you need.
