Cribs recalled after infant deaths

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than 500,000 cribs Tuesday after reports of injuries and deaths when the drop side of the crib detaches.

The recall involves all of Generation 2 Worldwide and "ChildESIGNS" drop side cribs. The commission is warning parents and caregivers to stop using the cribs immediately and is asking them to not try to fix them.

The problem comes from the crib's plastic hardware, which can break and cause the drop side of the crib to detach from a corner of a crib, according to a commission press release. When it detaches, a space is created where an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or trapped.

The commission has reports of three infants who suffocated after become trapped between the crib mattress and drop side. There also have been reports of many other injuries.

The cribs were sold at stores across the country, including Buy Buy Baby, Kmart and Walmart for between $60 and $160. If you have a crib, you should contact the store where you purchased it. They'll offer you either a refund, replacement crib or store credit. The commission asks consumers to contact them if they have any problem getting a remedy.
