It's just about time to apply for Wake County magnet schools.

The application period for the schools runs from Feb. 8 to Feb. 28. Many magnet schools are in and around downtown Raleigh, but others are scattered across the county. They typically sit in low-income areas. The goal is to reduce high concentrations of poverty and build a diverse student body, the school system's website says.

As a way to lure students from around the county, the schools offer unique programs - from language instruction to music programs and other special electives - that aren't found at other county schools.

From what I understand, it's far easier to get your rising kindergartner into the magnet program than your fifth grader, for instance.

There's plenty of debate and discussion about magnet schools and I'll leave that to all of you in the comments ... feel free to comment away.

But if you want to learn more about the application process, check out Wake's magnet program website.
