Two Chapel Hill's playgrounds are closed for some or all of this week and another will be closed early next month.

Here's what's happening, according to Bill Webster, assistant director of planning and development in the town's parks and recreation department:

  • The playground at Community Center Park will be closed Monday through at least Wednesday for turf renovation. This is a second phase of the project at the park. The playground also was closed for a couple of weeks in July. Officials hope to establish grass behind the retaining wall at the base of the hill, improve drainage of stormwater away from the equipment, and establish turf in a few areas that are now bare.
  • The Southern Community Park playground will be closed all week (at least through Wednesday). The town will re-grade the hill and play area in an attempt to fix stormwater runoff and to get turf well established on the play area hill. Heavy use and poor soils have created an unsustainable situation with heavy erosion.
  • The Homestead Park play area will close for a new poured-in-place rubber top coat. That work will most likely take place the week of Oct. 1.
