Durham park offers new monthly program for preschoolers

Here's what's scheduled. These are designed for kids ages 2 to 6.
- 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10: Fire Safety for Tots. Meet local firefighters, see their equipment, including a fire truck, and learn some important fire safety tips!
- 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14: Pirate Treasure Hunt. "X" marks the spot in this pirate adventure! Children will follow a map to find treasures, make a craft, and have a snack. Costumes are encouraged.
- 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Dec. 11, and 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Dec. 12: Cookies with Santa. This year, avoid the long lines at the mall, and bring your kids to meet Santa at our recreation center. We will provide a digital photo of each child with Santa (will be emailed to you), cookies and milk, and a holiday art project. You may bring your own camera for additional photos. Ho, ho, ho!
The cost is between about $2 and $4 per child depending on whether you live in Durham, live elsewhere and have one of Durham parks' Play More Cards.
The park, at 2000 S. Alston Ave., also offers Total Tot Time from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. The open gym program is for parents to bring their kids ages 5 and under to play and meet other kids in the gym. There is a small cost per family for Total Tot Time, which ranges between about $2 and $4.
