Playground Review: Forest Hills Park in Durham

Forest Hills Park features a playground, lots of open space and a sprayground that will close for the season Sept. 16.

"Mommy, it turns on!" I heard, along with the sound of spraying water, behind me.

I spun around to find my two-year-old about to get soaked at the small sprayground at Forest Hills Park in Durham the other week.

And I quickly got the answer that had popped into my head moments before as we walked toward the playground from the nearby parking lot: Yes, the sprayground is still on. Durham's spraygrounds, including the one at Forest Hills Park, will remain on for the season until Sept. 16.

After a few attempts to keep her dry (and a check for dry clothes in the car), I let her play in the water that sprays from the ground and from three rings that are tall enough for young children to run through.

But there's more to Forest Hills than the sprayground and an outdoor pool, which is now closed for the season.

The playground is pretty traditional with nothing particularly unique about it. There are the usual slides, monkey bars and bucket and belt swings here. One advantage of the playset for parents of toddlers and young preschoolers: Other than the spot next to the fire pole, there weren't any high drops for a young child to tumble from as he runs along its deck from slide to slide.

You'll find bathrooms and a small covered picnic area right next to the playground.

The best feature, other than the sprayground, is the large amount of green space here - great for pick-up games and running around.
