Sandbox, the Triangle-based, five-piece kids and family band, is gearing up for its annual concert at Raleigh's Fletcher Park this Sunday.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the guys will perform folksy versions of classic kid songs, along with original songs from their albums as well.

I've been following the band since it got its start many years ago. We are big fans at my house. As I wrote earlier this week in the Weekend Plans post, we always look forward to this annual free concert. It attracts a lot of families, who spread out on Fletcher Park's lawn with picnics, blankets and lawn chairs while the kids dance to the music.

If you can't make it to Sunday's concert, Sandbox has a bunch of other performances coming up (including at Go Ask Mom's event at North Hills on Oct. 20).

Jeff Morats, who sings, plays bass and was the guy to first start Sandbox, also tells me they are working on a new album of 13 original songs. The group hopes to release it at one of their Christmas shows. They 'll be playing several from the new album at Sunday's concert.

Here's where you can catch up with Sandbox in the coming months:

  • Sept. 8: Triangle CureSearch Walk (NC State Centennial campus)
  • Sept. 15: Yates Mill Harvest Festival (Historic Yates Mill Park)
  • Sept. 29: Storytelling Festival (Oak View County Park)
  • Oct 7: Fox 50 Family Fest (American Tobacco Campus)
  • Oct. 20: Go Ask Mom at the Midtown Farmers' Market (North Hills Mall)
  • Oct. 27: Reidsville Halloween Fest (Reidsville)
  • Nov. 15: Cameron Village Open House, Raleigh
  • Dec. 8: Holiday Under the Stars (Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill)
  • Dec. 15: Lunch with Sandbox and Santa (Garner Performing Arts Center)
Go to the band's website for more information. Can't wait for Sunday!
