Today marks the launch of the 2012-13 Common Application.

Right now, 488 colleges and universities accept this application either in addition to their own or as the sole application. Use of the application saves a huge amount of time as students may apply to multiple schools with one application. One caveat: Some schools may require additional supplements, however, most are quite minor in their request for information.

While used predominantly by highly selective and private colleges, many state institutions have begun to use the Common Application. Each year, dozens of new members sign up for its use. In North Carolina, students can submit the Common Application for UNC-Chapel Hill, Wilmington and Asheville. Use of this application gives students a jump on completing their applications before school starts in late August.

In addition to the three state schools, student can also apply to the following private North Carolina Colleges through the Common Application: Davidson, Duke, Guilford, Meredith, Salem College, Wake Forest and Warren Wilson.

For all other North Carolina public universities and colleges, students should use CFNC.org.
