Carolyn Zahnow, a local mom who lost her only child to suicide and has since dedicated much of her time to suicide prevention and grief support efforts, is starting a new support group for kids in Wake Forest.

The group, led by Zahnow and Lauren DeMetry-Bridges, will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays, at Wake Forest United Methodist Church in Wake Forest. It runs from Sept. 6 to Oct. 25. The program is for kids ages 6 to 11. It's free and sessions will include art therapy.

Cameron's Kids Grief Group, named after Zahnow's son, is the beginning of a soon-to-be nonprofit called The Shore Grief Center, which will be located in Wake Forest and host grief support groups for kids to adults.

I've written many times about Zahnow and her efforts, including her book Save the Teens.

DeMetry-Bridges is a licensed counselor with offices in Wake Forest and Raleigh. Zahnow has completed grief facilitator training for adolescents and teens with The Dougy Center and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

To register a child and for more information, contact Zahnow at 919-368-6286 or cczahnow@yahoo.com.
