Here's a sweet way to cool off next weekend.

Cary will hold its first Scoops for Troops, a military appreciation event in downtown Cary, on July 21. The event includes a Military Ice Cream Eating contest, an Ice Cream Churn Off and the Next Best Flavor Contest, a recipe contest where the public can create and submit their own original flavor for judging (sounds like a fun summer activity with kids!).

Local creamery Lumpy's Ice Cream will feature the winning flavor for a month. The public also is encouraged to bring expired coupons and non-perishable items for donation to troops overseas and their families.

The day includes activities for kids, live entertainment, opportunities to write postcards to troops and more.

It's from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 21, at the Downtown Performance Green at the corner of Kildaire Farm Road and Academy Street in Cary.
