JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh has a worm program and photography workshop for kids this month.

Here's when they are scheduled:

  • 10:30 a.m., July 25: Worms, Worms, Worms: Join Rhonda Sherman, extension specialist, for a morning all about worms and vermicomposting. Vermicomposting (composting with worms) is a popular way to compost for households, schools, and businesses. During the workshop, participants will put a worm bin together and decorate it to take home with them. Worms will also be available at an additional cost to participants to complete the bin setup. Recommended for rising kindergartners and up. Parents and caregivers are asked to stay with participants during the workshop. Cost is $12 per child. Click here for details and to register.
  • 9 a.m. to noon, July 28: Photography in the Garden. Join award-winning photographer Susan Bailey to learn more about your camera and technical topics like exposure, lighting and composition. You will also learn how to take successful flower and landscape images. Susan will cover the basics in a classroom presentation and then take the group out to photograph the gardens and give hands-on advice. For kids ages 12 to 16. Prior knowledge is helpful, but not mandatory. Students will need to bring their own digital camera with the manual. You are welcome to bring accessories like tripods. Plan to bring a drink and small snack. After a morning of gaining confidence with their camera and practicing in the gardens, participants in this program are encouraged to enter their images in the youth category of the JC Raulston Juried Print Competition sponsored by the JC Raulston Arboretum and the Triangle Carolinas Nature Photography Association in August. Cost is $35 per child. Click here for details and to register.
Pre-registration is required for both programs. JC Raulston Arboretum, a great place for families to explore, is part of N.C. State University.
