Training for Baby: Super cold

Published: 2012-06-12 20:50:00

I am knocking on the door of my third trimester; coincidentally at the same time my baby is knocking on my bladder.

I never knew babies could kick your bladder like that. I always thought they just beat your stomach and rib area. But I’ve got a very active child in there and apparently he loves to move those limbs. A good sign, from what I hear.

At this stage, I am starting to discover things I really didn’t know about being pregnant - like getting sick and staying that way.

I got sick last week. Within two days, a run of the mill scratchy throat turned into a fever-filled illness with swollen glands and a sore throat. I haven’t felt that terrible since I had mono freshman year of high school.

Since I was feeling awful, I called my regular docs, who referred me back to my OB.

Seriously? My OB?

Sometimes I wonder if they know what they are doing with the other end of my body, and now they wanted me to go see them about my severe sore throat and fever?

Oh well, I thought, maybe they can help me.

After telling the nurse three times about my fever, she finally decided to put it on the chart and then take my temperature. I had fever. Not much of a shock there.

A throat culture soon revealed no infection.

It is a cold, the doc said.

A cold?

How could a cold make me feel this awful?

Apparently, when you get pregnant, your comprised immune system means it could take weeks to recover from something like a cold.

By the weekend, I was coughing and had no voice.

I am still struggling to get my voice back from this super cold.

My mommy friends say they went through the same thing while pregnant. Apparently illnesses just take a lot longer to get over when you are pregnant.

So, I am resigned to a week or more of Tylenol severe cold.

Did any of you get sick like this while pregnant? Do you have any home remedies that help with sinuses and coughing?

The only home remedy for a sore throat that I found was eating Lemonheads. They help produce more saliva and soothe your throat.

Sounds like Pregnancy Rhinitis and if you haven't already you may get pregnancy headaches. Peppermints work too for sore throats. But it seems to me doctors should INFORM their patients more

Yes, when I get a cold while pregnant it seems to last forever! Along the lines of the netti pot, I have found the bottle irrigation system works better than the netti pot for me. I can't handle the netti pot but actively squirting the bottle is OK for some reason. I have gotten the Ayr brand bottle at Rite Aid before. (And yes, be sure to use distilled water or previously boiled water). Otherwise some extra TLC for your immune system with rest, vitamin C, and probiotics may help some too.

That's what happens when you don't proof read before hitting submit. In my previous post it should say ago instead of again and would get radiation should be wouldn't get radiation.

When I was pregnant with my son 17 years again I got bronchitis and could not get rid of it. I actually cracked a rib from coughing. My OB couldn't believe it. It was quite comical getting an x-ray to see how bad it was and to make sure nothing else happen. It took my husband and 4 x-ray techs to take the x-ray so that the baby would receive any radiation. I was 7 months pregnant and had to lay on a firm mattress on the side the rib was cracked to stabilize it. This last for about 6 weeks. I could only move to shower and use the restroom. Believe it or not I did get pregnant a second time. Hang in there! It could be more challenging.

I second using a neti pot. Just DO NOT use tap water, especially since you are pregnant, and use previously boiled water or distilled water only!

Oooh yeah. My daughter's favorite trick was to whack her head against her side of my cervix. The pain dropped me to my knees in the middle of the mall, the first time she did it.

With my son, it was sudden, violent nosebleeds.

Pregnancy is a mess! But I'm sorry you're feeling cruddy. It's tough now, but it's worth it soon, I promise. =)

I highly recommend the neti pot. Whenever I was sick while pregnanct, I used twice a day and it really helped.

I got a horrible cold at the beginning of my 2nd pregnancy which went straight into 15 weeks of constant nausea. The H1N1 scare was a hot topic during that pregnancy, and I was convinced I had it because I was so miserable. It really was just a cold that unhappily coincided with the start of my morning sickness. There really wasn't much I could take except for Tylenol, and I tried to drink as much water as possible.

Yes- I recall having a bad cold and another time a 24 hr stomach bug, in which I was paranoid about getting dehydrated. Make sure you get extra rest, as it can take longer for your body to get over a virus.

Sorry you are sick. And yes it happens to everyone. Use a netti pot every morning. Also there are some nasal sprays that are safe to use
