Natural sciences museum plans transit of Venus event

I wrote about an event at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center on Tuesday that will provide an opportunity to see the transit of Venus, which happens when the planet passes between the earth and sun.

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences' new Nature Research Center is planning a special free event too to view the movement of Venus across the surface of the sun.

It begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with a 30-minute presentation about the transit by Rachel Smith, director of the research center's astronomy and space observation research laboratory. Weather permitting, from 6 p.m. to sunset, which is around 8:30 p.m., visitors will be able to see the transit of Venus through solar telescopes on the ninth floor of the Green Square parking deck, located at the corner of Edenton and McDowell streets. Only 10 solar transits of Venus have been known to occur since the year 1396. This is the last one during the 21st century. Read more about it here.
