Help a Mom: Music programs for preschoolers

A three-year-old boy is interested in music and his mom is looking for programs that might expose him to different types of instruments and music.

I recently received this email from a reader, who is looking for a music program for her preschooler.

Here's what she wrote: My 3.5 year old son is very interested in music, and we want to encourage him of course. Is there anything in the Triangle that might expose a child as young as he is to different types of music and instruments without being structured lessons (which I believe he might be too young for)? I'm under no illusion he is a prodigy, but we're starting to look for activities outside of his preschool to get him involved in.

Things I've tried to check into so far are geared for therapy or didn't seem appropriate to his age. Any suggestions you have on where I can look would be appreciated.

I recommended some Music Together and Kindermusik programs in the area. I also noted that some children do start lessons in their preschool years. I was four when I started taking piano lessons using the Suzuki method, which emphasizes playing music by ear rather than reading it and is a popular way for young children to learn to play.
