I love this twist on the traditional Mother's Day brunch ...

Durham Spirits Company on Trinity Avenue in Durham will have a Mother's Day brunch on May 13 (which is Mother's Day) that starts as a cooking class and ends as a meal.

The menu includes low country shrimp and grits; onion, spinach and goat cheese frittata; and strawberry stuffed French toast.

Students will learn how to cook the dishes and then enjoy the meal on a wrap-around back porch. Kids are welcome, but they should be ages 10 and up and each attendee must register. It's $59 per person.

The class is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., May 13. Click here for more information about Durham Spirits Company and to register.

The business, which was started by Katie Coleman a certified chef and culinary instructor in 2011, offers some other classes that would be fun for a moms' night out or date night. They include a class on biscuit making on May 19, one on donuts on May 20 and a Father's Day grilling class on June 17.
