The 12th annual birdhouse competition is this weekend at JC Raulston Arboretum and the event includes categories for kids.

The competition, sponsored by the Wake Audubon Society, North Carolina Bluebird Society and the arboretum, seeks adults and kids to create birdhouses. Some are whimsical. Others are absolutely beautiful.

Categories for kids are split up among age groups: 4 to 6, 7 to 9, 10 to 12 and 13 to 15. Entries are due by 6 p.m., Friday. For details, click here.

As part of the competition, the arboretum also will offer guided children's tours this weekend. Kids and their families will go hunting for birds and what they like to snack on. Tours start at 11 a.m., Saturday, and continue on the hour. The last Saturday tour will be at 4 p.m.

Tours start at 1 p.m., Sunday, and continue on the hour with the last tour leaving at 3 p.m. The tours are free. You don't need to register. For details, click here.

JC Raulston Arboretum is part of N.C. State and sits near campus and the N.C. State Fairgrounds on Beryl Road.
