It's time to pick strawberries!

Strawberry season started quickly and early this year with some farms opening up over the last week.

For information about dozens of farms in the region, check our strawberry farms list. I'm in the process of updating it now.

Since we're still early in the season, before you go, be sure to check with individual farms to make sure they have berries ready for you!

I can taste the strawberry shortcake now!

Strawberries need lots of hot sunshine to make them good and sweet. I wait for about three weeks into the season to start picking. Can never buy the "cardboard" tasting early ones from the stores that are white inside. I'm a strawberry farmer's daughter from LA and they were good and sweet down there. I pick now from Lyon's Farms near Creedmoor and they will be $1.25 lb. this year! Happy Pickin'

Has anyone compiled a list of how much the pick your owns cost at each farm?

The berries at Ball 's Berries and Produce on Rock Service Station Rd are a little small, but very sweet and very juicy. They made fantastic home made fruit roll ups sweetened slightly with honey from Ball 's Berries.

The berries get sweeter as the weather gets warmer.

The strawberries I have gotten from two different places are not as sweet as they usually are. The first place they are very small and the second they are large but still not sweet even though they are very red.

I have picked 4 times in the past week and a half @ Smith's Nursery in Johnston County! Their plants are LOADED and they are awesome!
