Tryon Palace in New Bern will have a special day for homeschoolers next month and now is the time to sign up.

I wrote about Tryon Palace last year and highly recommend it as a fantastic family destination. It's about a two hour drive from Raleigh.

The historic site features the palace and grounds, along with a very interactive, state-of-the-art North Carolina History Center that is designed for school age children. My then six-year-old loved it.

Tryon Palace will host a Spring Home School Day called Civil War Days on May 4. Families will be able to tour the historic buildings and the history center. Each group that registers will get a packet with a map of the day's activities, a suggested reading list on the Civil War and activities that can be done at home to continue the day's learning.

Galleries and tours will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 4. There will be Civil War-era games, hands-on crafts, demonstrations and special activities designed for families from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. that day throughout the site. There's plenty of space for picnics.

Groups that register before May 2 get the early registration rate of $10 per student and $12 per adult. Tickets also will be available at the ticket desk on May 4 for $12 per student and $15 per adult.

And if you're not a homeschooler, I definitely recommend Tryon Palace as a great and educational activity during summer break or track outs.
