Help a Mom: Graduation gift ideas

Graduation season will be here before you know it and one sister is on the ball.

Here's what she wrote:

This gift is really for my sister, who is graduating from high school, but I thought other moms might have or want insight. My sister has a lot of things (computer, iPhone, digital camera, car...) so she doesn't need a whole lot for college that she won't get from our parents. I was hoping someone might have a suggestion for a meaningful gift that an 18-year-old would appreciate. I might do a photo collage, but other ideas would be helpful!

I had one idea: I featured Julianne Walther, owner of Patchwork Memories, a couple of months ago. She makes T-shirt quilts which are popular graduation gifts. I'd love to hear other suggestions.

You are going to think this is a strange gift idea and, in fact, so will the girl you give it to...initially..But once she moves into her collage dorm you will receive a big "Thank You". If your graduate is a girl, I always give a tool box. You know..one of those in a plastic case with a place for each tool. yes, she will look at you like this is the strangest gift ever. But once she moves into the dorm and they need hammers to hang pictures on the walls, or a screw driver to tighten something she will find it is the best gift she has ever received. In fact, it's a great way to meet the girls on your floor b/c on move in weekend..pretty much everyone on the floor will need something.

A laundry basket and everything she will need to do clothes. Buy her enough to get through the school year a close to it. It's one of those things few think about

My son graduated from high school last year and I agree with the laundry idea and the tool box. He did receive a large laundry bag monogrammed as well as the basket, detergent, etc. He does use those a lot. I think a small first aid kit, stationery with stamps and addresses, or a photo album with a lifetime of pictures in it would all be great gifts.

If your sister is attending a college away from home- you can do goodie baskets once a month while she is away. You can put snacks, pens, shampoo, homemade goodies(always a hit) ect., little fun things she would enjoy. Because most colleges don't allow freshman to have cars, you could get her a bus pass for that area or something like that.

A tool box is a great idea. Don't forget to add duck tape. Our daughter was a hero showing up with pink duck tape.

when my daughter graduated, she and two friends had worked hard to earn money to go on a cruise after graduation with one of the other girls parents, so for graduation, I gave all three a christmas ornament of a cruise ship with the year on it, as a keepsake for their wonderful trip. gift certificates to food places near their college would be great as well as StarBucks, etc.

Tool box,My niece made my daughter a photo collage with the graduation announcement and things in it, a snack box. Fill the snack box with individual wrapped snacks and drink mixes like crystal light or koolaid also include the 3m wall hangers(you know the ones that wont damage walls) and gift cards for the area they will be in. If it is a smaller town they are going to,research what the restuarants are around the college. I sent my niece dominos, subway and mcdonalds gift cards.
