A popular neighborhood basketball court in Durham has an opportunity for a transformation, but it needs the community's help.

The basketball court at Elmira Avenue Park in Durham is one of 25 courts across the country that will be refreshed thanks to the Sprite Spark Parks Project. Sprite has partnered with the National Recreation and Park Association on the project, which involves voting by submitting codes found on Sprite products at SpriteSparkParks.com.

Courts will get at least $5,000. The top 10 vote getters will win $15,000. The money can be used to refurbish rims, backboards, lights, benches, playing surfaces and other improvements.

Elmira Avenue Park at 540 Elmira Ave. in southeast Durham was built in the 1970s and has seen very little renovation other than the recent addition of lights for the tennis courts. It includes two outdoor basketball courts, along with tennis courts and a playground that is shared with a neighborhood elementary school. A pictures shows one of the park's nets nearly gone and the backboard covered in graffiti.

People can vote for Elmira Avenue Park and others from today through May 31 by submitting the My Coke Rewards codes found on Sprite and Sprite Zero Fridge Pack, 20-pack, 24-pack, 20 oz. and 2-liter products.

I was sent a free special voting code that can be used once per day from today to May 31. It is SPRITEPARKSVOTE.

To vote using the special voting code or codes from Sprite products, go to SpriteSparkParks.com.
