Poe Montessori Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh will host open houses for prospective students and parents at 9:30 a.m. and noon, Wednesday.

The first open house features classroom observations and a look at Poe's program. The second open house features a school tour. Poe is the only Montessori program in the Wake County Public School System and offers the system's only tuition-based preschool Montessori program.

Because of Wake's new choice plan, Poe has 20 percent more magnet seats available this year than in past years, according to a press release. Openings for the 2012-2013 school year are primarily for pre-k and kindergarten. A magnet program representative will be at the open houses to discuss the selection process and answer questions.

“The structure of the (Montessori) classroom has allowed my daughter to be an active participant in her learning, continually giving her choice within limits and bolstering her independence and confidence,” said Michelle Parkerson, mother of a Poe second grader, in the release. “Furthermore, her learning opportunities have not been limited by her grade or her age; each time a skill is mastered, she is given work at the next level even when it extends beyond her grade level curriculum. Most notably, my seven-year old has come to identify herself as a peaceful citizen of the world.”
