My peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I'm having for lunch right now isn't looking so hot as I peruse the menu for the new cafe at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham.
Sprout Cafe opened last week. Tom Meyer, owner of The Q Shack in Raleigh and Green's Restaurant at UNC Hospital, will run the cafe.
I haven't eaten here yet, but the menu looks pretty affordable and healthy. Sandwiches, paninis, salads and burgers are $6.95. Soups and sides are $2 to $3.
Meals for kids and, as the menu says, "the young at heart," are $5.95. (We're semi-regulars at The Q Shack in Raleigh and I also appreciate Meyer letting "young at heart" adults also order from the kids menu there ... I want a cookie too!).
Choices on the kids menu include grilled cheese, chicken tenders, ham sandwich, turkey sandwich, BBQ pork sandwich, hamburger or hot dog, along with a side; cookie or banana pudding; and lemonade or milk. Options also include a veggie hot dog and a "peanut butter" and jelly sandwich, with a peanut-free soy butter.
Meyer is being mindful of food allergies. There is actually a separate prep area where meals can be specially made to eliminate the risk of cross contamination. There also are vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu.
Breakfast also will be served until 10:30 a.m. Menu items, including oatmeal, fruit smoothies and French toast, range between $2 and $4.50.
Locopops, which I'm thrilled to see on the menu, are $2.50
