If you have young kids at home, you'll want to mark this one on your calendar: N.C. State's Farm Animal Days is scheduled for March 28 to March 30.

This very popular annual event gives children a chance to see and touch farm animals and learn about agriculture. There will be tractors on display, along with an assortment of farm animals. Kids can see cows, horses, chicks, turkeys, ducks, pigs, sheep, goats and rabbits and touch some of them.

There's an area for picnics and, (perhaps, best of all, in my book) free Howling Cow ice cream, which is made at N.C. State and is absolutely delicious. (I always get a cone at the N.C. State Fair stand and have even made a special trip to N.C. State for a scoop. It's that good.).

The event is designed for school field trips and is best for preschoolers to first graders. But families are welcome to go on their own as well.

I've been a couple of times and we've always had a great time. The animals and ice cream are a hit, but there's always a line to climb up on the tractors too.

Farm Animal Days is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, to Friday, March 30. It's held rain or shine. Event organizers say the least busy times are 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. I definitely agree. I usually get there as soon as it opens. By the time we leave, about an hour or so later, it's very busy. (And, yes, I wish there were weekend hours too).

Farm Animal Days, which is put together by the departments of Animal Science, Poultry Science and Food Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State, is at the Beef Educational Unit, 4505 Mid Pines Rd., off Lake Wheeler Road south of Raleigh.

Maybe I'll see you there!
