All aboard! Amtrak's exhibit train rolls into Raleigh

Amtrak's 40th anniversary "exhibit train" is open for free tours at Raleigh's train station this weekend. The train made its debut at National Train Day in Washington, D.C., in May and has been traveling across the country since then.

It will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at Raleigh's train station, 320 West Cabarrus St. near downtown.

The train has two locomotives with historic paint schemes and renovated baggage cars to display educational exhibits focusing on each decade of the railroad's existence. There is vintage advertising, past menus and dinnerware, period uniforms, photographs and other memorabilia.

For many kids, just getting to walk onto a train will be entertainment on its own. But, outside the train, you'll also find train-themed kids' activities sponsored by Disney's Chuggington. Activities there include some coloring pages and Chuggington tracks and trains.

There's also a gift shop with 40th anniversary merchandise.
