Duke Gardens ramps up its programs for the spring

With spring just around the corner, Duke Gardens is gearing up with a variety of activities for kids and families this month.

With spring just around the corner, Duke Gardens in Durham is gearing up with a variety of activities for kids and families this month.

Here's what's scheduled (note that many require registration):

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., March 15, Nature Storytime, a free drop-in book club. For children ages 3 to 7, adult chaperone required. Celebrate the season with a story read aloud to the group out in the Gardens. Each story relates to the season or garden spot. Check Duke Gardens' website the Monday before to see an announcement of the book to be read.
10:45 a.m. to noon, March 17, Traditional Japanese Tea Gathering: St. Patrick's Day Tea. Enjoy a period of respite in the Duke Gardens teahouse with Nancy Hamilton, a practitioner of Urasenke Tradition of Tea. As a guest to tea, you will experience the warmth of a traditional Japanese tea gathering in an intimate setting. Enjoy the aesthetics, poetry and serenity of this rich tradition over an enticing bowl of whisked green tea and a Japanese confection. Children ages 6 and older are welcome with an accompanying adult at the family rate of $40 per adult and child. Call 668-1707 to register. Another session is offered from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., March 17.
1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., March 24, Children's Activity: Wind World. Where does the wind come from? Where does it go? Learn about this force of nature and build tools to help you “see” wind. For children ages 5 to 7; adult chaperone required. The fee is $6. Call 668-1707 to register.
11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 25, Grand Tea Gathering: Cherry Blossom Festival. Celebrate the cherry blossoms at our annual Grand Tea Gathering. Guests will enjoy a presentation of the tea tradition in an open-air garden setting. Festivities will feature Japanese taiko drumming and a display of traditional Japanese arts, including Ikebana by the Sarah P. Duke Ikebana Chapter, and Bonsai by members of the Triangle Bonsai Society. Adults are $10; children, $5. Call 668-1707 to register.
