Fayette-Mom: Now entering Birthday Party Season

Posted January 16, 2012

Jennifer Joyner

If you’re trying to find me and you’re having no success, please, don’t take offense.

I am just buried over here under a mound of birthday party invitations, for it is, indeed, Birthday Party Season.

Seriously, does it seem like there are more birthday parties this time of year? Is there some sort of data to back me up, that more people are born in the early months?

Because every year, right after New Year’s, it seems like there is an onslaught of kid birthday parties to attend, including one for my own child. I have a steady stream of gift bags and tissue paper at the ready, and I never go to Walmart or Target without hitting up the toy section for a gift.

The calendar is filled with roller skating parties, spa birthday parties, laser tag, ice skating, kid gym parties, you name it. And it looks like this every weekend until about March. My poor kids … they won’t know what to do without birthday cake and goody bags every Saturday.

So, if you need me, don’t fret. Just look for me at the skating rink or the park or the kid art studio. I’m there every Saturday, from now through the foreseeable future …..

kellypratz...this idea is not too expensive.

When my daughter was 10 years old, (she will be 21 in Sept.!!!:) The only party we hosted outside our home was a bowling party at the local bowling alley, inviting only her closest girlfriends. I made the cake and we ordered pizza, (this alley let us bring our own food)! We have some great pictures from that day and because my daughter did not have parties every year, it remains a special birthday memory for her.

Doesn't anyone do home parties anymore? Those were always my kids favorite.

My wife and I have an invitation business and you are right - we see a surge of orders this time of year. It could be that everyone has delayed their parties until after the holidays, or it could be related to spring being about 9 months before now :-)

My kids are still young (5 and almost 2) so we don't get hit up for the birthday parties...yet. It's actually been kind of funny: it seems like every time my 5 year old gets a party invite, we already have something else going on so we've only been to 2 since he started preschool last year.

We have some friends who have 3 kids, and it seemed like at least one kid was at a birthday party every weekend while they were in elementary school.

I'm actually trying to figure out what kind of party I should give my soon to be 10 year old daughter. She has mentioned she would like to invite her friends from school and I'm thinking "what is a good, fairly inexpesive thing to do?" I'm thinking of maybe doing a party at the local park, that way the kids can run around all they want and don't destroy my house.
