Here's a unique way to mark Black History Month.

Historic Stagville State Historic Site in Durham and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center will team up for Stagville under the Stars from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Feb. 18. The event focuses on astronomy and night sky myths and legends told in African cultures, along with related stories told by scientiests today.

The program begins with storytelling at Historic Stagville's visitor center. Then guests can step inside the original plantation home where interpreters can answer questions about the lives of slaves. They'll also be able to peer through Morehead's telescopes at Mars, Jupiter and, possibly, Venus (weather permitting). The program ends with a constellation tour looking at the same stars as our ancestors.

Historic Stagville is located at 5828 Old Oxford Hwy. in Durham. Read my review of Historic Stagville from last year. For more information about the event and Historic Stagville, go to www.stagville.org.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
