Help a Mom: Mom-to-be needs best place to deliver, best OB/GYN

Published: 2012-01-03 20:36:00

I received this email from a Go Ask Mom reader over the holidays. She recently found out that she was pregnant (congratulations!). She's not ready to share the news with her friends or family yet, but she does need to start looking for doctors and the place where she'll deliver.

Here's what she wrote:

"I am newly pregnant :) and need feedback on the best place to deliver... WakeMed Raleigh or Rex...and any suggestions on the best OB/GYNs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I couldn't think of a better place to get great opinions than WRAL's Go Ask Mom!!"

And, yes, she did write that last bit (and it made my day :). She is looking for advice on Raleigh-area hospitals and doctors, but because Go Ask Mom readers come from across the region, feel free to share your favorites elsewhere too.

Do you have advice? Can you help this mom-to-be? Please share in the comments box below. (If you don't see the comments box below, you'll need to log in or sign up for a WRAL account. You can do that by going to the top of the page and clicking on either "log in" or "register").

Help a Mom features questions from readers every Wednesday. If you have a question that you'd like to ask Go Ask Mom readers, click here to email it to me.

Dr. Tahtawi is the best OB! She really cares about her patients. She delivered both my children. I had my gallbladder removed at 26 weeks pregnant. When I told her my symptoms, she pin pointed my gallbladder right away. I became very sick and she made every effort to find me the best surgeon! She checked on me every day while in the hospital, sometimes more than once. She is incredibly smart and makes you feel at ease. I’ve recommended her to friends and they were not disappointed! http://www.insiderpages.com/b/15247351894/total-health-total-woman-cary

Kamm Mckenzie OBGYN (WAKE OBGYN) is wonderful!! I too suffered a miscarriage and they were so caring and supportive, did not feel like I was just some # on a chart. They deliver at WakeMed which has WONDERFUL staff and delivery rooms. The recovery rooms are a little small but you won't be thinking about any of that while you are there :)

I saw a different OBGYN and delivered at a different hospital due to a move to Durham and was worried that the drive would be too far while in labor and there are no comparisons. Kamm McKenzie OBGYN have a caring and wonderful staff, you don't know how wonderful they are until you have dealt with someone else.

I recommend Raleigh OB/GYN (great practice) and Dr. Segal. The practice delivers at Rex. Rex is a great hospital and the services and food are excellent. I have my last daughter their in Oct 2009.

Another one from my inbox:

Hands down Kamm McKenzie OBGYN. I had two miscarriages and they did not make me wait months to find out what was wrong. They did blood work and found out immediately. We changed some meds and I know have two precious girls. My oldest will be 2 and my second is 3 months.

When I had the second miscarriage and was extremely upset, one of the Dr's called and checked on me at home. You don't see that often. They have the best bedside manners and are always upbeat and kind. Love them!

Sarah

I delivered at WakeMed Raleigh Campus in April 2011 and was extremely happy with the experience. Kamm McKenzie was the OB group I chose because they deliver at WakeMed and because they came highly recommended by co-workers. Dr. Wheeler was on call the day I delivered, and she was excellent. The fact that WakeMed Raleigh Campus has a level IV NICU was a huge factor in my decision to deliver there. If my baby needed it, I wanted her to get the best care possible. All the nurses were excellent, both in L&D and post-partum. I ended up having an unexpected C-section, and although I was nervous about it, everything went smoothly, and everyone involved was very caring and supportive. WakeMed also has lactation consultants available who checked in on me every day, offering encouragement and support. And WakeMed offers many classes for expectant and new parents. I highly recommend.

I recommend Kamm-McKenzie to all my friends, it's a great practice and all of the doctors and staff there are attentive, competent and caring. Dr. McKenzie manages to treat you like you are the only pregnant woman in the world, very nice, and Dr. Bernstien is my favorite. The labor and delivery nurses at Wakemed are awesome! You will not need a labor doula with these nurses, they are very proactive and progressive. So save your money for the post-partum doula and the lactation consultant if you choose to breastfeed. Best wishes!

I delivered my daughter at Wake Med Raleigh & HIGHLY recommend Kamm-Mckenzie. I saw all if the doctors & loved each if them.. Especially Dr. Bass! Congrats :)

Physicians for Women, Drs. Seidel and Sheshadri in Cary. They are very thorough and caring. My daughter went there, she had issues and owes their ability to the healthy delivery of her children. I go there as a gyn patient as does my other daughter. Their office staff is amazing as well. And I admire any physician that will refer someone or a second opinion if they are want to verify their approach, and they will. We it not for this group, my first grandchild would not be here--another physician ignored very important signs of fetal stress.

Please tell this mother that she cant go wrong with wake or rex to deliver her wonderful blessing. But, first choosing an OB will help solve her issue faster than anything because they usually go to only 1 of the hospitals. I HIGHLY recommend Wilkerson OB/GYN because I was delevered by that practice and both my boys were delivered their also and the one on the way will also be delivered their. They go to Rex because they are located on the campus of Rex Hospital. Take a breath and enjoy the days to come you cant get them back and take one decision at a time, dont stress out things will work in the end they always do!!!!!

Atrium OBGYN is always my recommendation. They do deliver at Rex. They supported me through natural birth, meds no meds. They have a great demeanor through the whole pregnancy. I also used a doula for both of my deliveries. They do deliver at Rex. I'm nervous now because my insurance no longer supports Rex and I'm afraid of where I will go if we do have another child.
