Advocates for Health in Action is inviting parents, teachers and school staff to a free workshop on Jan. 12 that focuses on creative and low-cost ideas for how schools can raise awareness about healthy eating.

The free, interactive workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 12, at the Wake County Northern Regional Center in Wake Forest. Registration is required.

Participants will talk about how schools can celebrate National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign in March of the American Dietetic Association. Sarah Martin, past Wake PTA Council president, and Jodi Kleiber and Jeff Nelson of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Apex, will share ideas about creative, fun and inexpensive ways to involve kids and their families in making good nutritional choices.

The nonprofit group also will share information about its 2012 Brains and Bodies Award program, which recognizes public and private elementary and middle schools across Wake County that meet and exceed local wellness policies to create a healthy school environment. Advocates for Health in Action will grant funding ranging from $50 to $500 to 2012 award winners.

Go to Advocates for Health in Action's website to register for the workshop and for more information about the awards program.
